Search Engine Optimisation - Anchor Text

What is anchor text?
Anchor text is the visible hyperlinked text on the page. For example, let's examine this code:

Search Engine Optimisation
The anchor text for this link is "Search Engine Optimisation".

Why is anchor text important?

Anchor text is important in search engine rankings because the search engines use anchor text to help determine the relevance of a page being linked to for those keywords. By having this link pointing to my web page from other websites, this search engine optimisation blog will perform better in searches for the phrase "search engine optimisation". Have you seen many "click here" links? These links are not very well optimised as they don't describe the page's content.

Go through your site, or find sites that are linking to you and see what the anchor text is like. If the anchor text isn't well optimised for your targeted keywords? Ask if they can change the anchor text for the links to your website.

Don't forget "text" links bear more weight in search engines than "image" links.
